“Loth, keep me posted about what Daimin does.”

“And if he leaves, Lord?”

I held back a sigh. “Then let him go. The man has free will. I won’t take that from him.”

I could tell Lotholio wasn’t entirely comfortable with that answer, but all he said was, “As you say, Lord.”

I dismissed him and walked back up to my personal chambers. I flopped facedown on the largest pillow, the one that served as a bed. There was no other way to get onto it than flopping. You couldn’t lie down, couldn’t ease yourself in like you could with a recliner, you just dropped onto it and heard it poof slightly as you landed. “Aegeon,” I said into the pillow, telepathically addressing the sentient dome protecting the city.

“I stand ready, Lord,” came the reply. Aegeon’s voice is a cross between Barry White and James Earl Jones. I hadn’t done that intentionally when I’d created him, but it fit.

“A group of Urisk may leave the city tonight. Do not stop them, but send a watcher or two to follow them at a distance. If they get into trouble, contact me.”

“Yes, Lord.”

I broke contact with Aegeon and just stayed on the pillow for a minute. I took a breath, let it out, and got to my feet. There was work to do.
